Mom...You Need a Buddy

October 25, 20252 min read

When my kids were little, life was busy, stressful and anxiety filled. I had trouble processing my feelings and most of my daily decisions were made from an anxious, fearful place in my mind.

My inability to process feelings in a healthy way resulted in a rollercoaster of emotions. My parenting skills were affected by these extreme emotions.

One day, I was driving my son to tutoring and was probably in a crazy anxious mom state of mind.

My brain was focused on the negative. Dinner wasn’t made, my workday wasn't even close to being done, but tutoring needed to happen.

I remember feeling overwhelmed and anxious energy running through my body. Suddenly, my son locked eyes with me through the rear-view mirror.

Then he said “Mom I think in life you need a buddy. It's a lot of work to do this and you need a helper to get through it all.”

Well, what do you say about that?

My seven-year-old child realized life is stressful, but more enjoyable with a buddy.

Now that’s some wisdom.

Has someone hit you with a zinger where you had no choice but to think?

His comment made the anxiety about dinner and work disappear.

I dropped him off at the tutors and watched him run into the building. I started to think of all the sweet moments I had with him lately that were overshadowed with anxiety and fear.

I vowed to make some changes in my thinking so I could enjoy parenting and stop being anxious all the time.

I wanted to stop worrying about things I couldn’t control and stop fearing the future.

That night I thanked my son for his buddy advice.

Has anyone hit you with a zinger lately, but you were too stressed out to listen?

Think about your week and try to carve out a few minutes to see if there were any moments that should have hit home.

This is the beginning of gaining control over your thoughts and emotions.

Much love,

Americ
